Can You Polish a Ceramic-Coated Car?
Why polishing coated paint requires expertise, the right tools, and the right products

One of the most common questions we hear at Urban Werks is: “Can I wax over my ceramic coating?”
The short answer is no—you shouldn’t.
While wax has long been the go-to for enhancing gloss and water beading, it doesn’t mix well with modern coatings. Applying wax on top of ceramic coating can cloud the finish, dull the clarity, and even interfere with the coating’s self-cleaning properties.

Understanding What Polishing Does
Polishing is a corrective process designed to remove minor surface defects like swirl marks or oxidation. It works by gently abrading a thin layer of material from the paint—or in this case, the top layer of the ceramic coating.
That’s why it’s important to understand: polishing a coated car will remove some or all of the coating depending on the aggressiveness of the polish and pad used.
If the goal is simply to enhance gloss or eliminate faint marks, polishing must be done with light pressure and coating-safe finishing products—not compounds intended for bare paint.

When Polishing Is Necessary
Most coated vehicles don’t need frequent polishing if they’re properly maintained. However, there are situations where light polishing is justified:
- The coating’s surface feels rough or shows mild haze from environmental buildup.
- The coating’s hydrophobic performance has diminished over time.
- A small section shows minor scratches or high spots from improper washing.
In these cases, our technicians at Urban Werks perform a controlled, light polish to remove imperfections and prepare the surface for a new layer or topper.

The Urban Werks Approach to Polishing Coated Cars
At Urban Werks, we evaluate every coated vehicle before any polishing work begins. If the coating is still largely intact, we use GYEON Q²M Polish—a fine finishing compound designed for coated surfaces that gently restores gloss without stripping protection.
After polishing, we thoroughly decontaminate the surface using GYEON Q²M Prep and reapply either a ceramic topperlike Q²M Cure or a full GYEON professional coating if the existing one has worn down.
This ensures that every step protects the coating’s structure while restoring clarity and smoothness.
When Full Reapplication Is the Better Choice
If the coating has been compromised—through age, harsh chemicals, or repeated abrasion—polishing may remove it entirely. In that case, a complete reapplication is the best path forward.
Our process includes:
- Decontamination wash
- Coating removal using GYEON Q²M Total Remover
- Clay bar treatment and multi-stage polish
- Fresh installation of a new GYEON Q² Flash EVO or Infinite coating
This resets the finish to a factory-clean state and ensures long-term performance moving forward.
The Bottom Line
Yes, you can polish a ceramic-coated car—but only when it’s done correctly. Polishing without professional inspection risks stripping your coating completely.
At Urban Werks, our certified team uses only GYEON-approved methods and products to safely correct, maintain, and renew ceramic-coated vehicles—ensuring long-lasting gloss and protection that never compromises the finish.
