Why More EV Owners Are Choosing Surface Protection
Tesla, Rivian, Lucid. New tech doesn’t make you immune to real-world wear.

Electric vehicles are often celebrated for their innovation. Battery range. Instant torque. Screens everywhere. But what rarely gets discussed is what happens to the paint once it leaves the showroom. The truth? EVs are just as vulnerable, if not more so, to environmental damage than traditional vehicles. And as more Teslas and Rivians show up in our shop, that reality becomes clearer every week.
Owning an EV doesn’t eliminate the need for protection. It just makes it easier to overlook.
Modern Platforms, Familiar Problems
The design of most EVs makes them especially prone to surface damage. Large front ends without grilles. Lower ride height. Softer factory paint. These factors all contribute to a greater risk of rock chips, bug etching, and premature fading.
We’ve seen the effects. Low-mileage Teslas arrive with clear coat damage across the bumper. Rivians with etched bugs locked into the front end. Paint can only take so much exposure before it begins to degrade. Preventing damage is always easier than reversing it.
It’s not about overdoing the protection. It’s about getting it right from the beginning.
What Works: PPF, Ceramic Coating, and Window Tint
Our EV clients typically opt for a combination of full front paint protection film and ceramic coating. PPF stops chips, scuffs, and impact marks from ruining the front of the vehicle. Ceramic coating enhances gloss, simplifies maintenance, and adds chemical resistance to exposed surfaces. When installed together, the system functions as a full barrier, not just a cosmetic upgrade.
Ceramic tint has also become more popular with EVs, and for good reason. Products like LLumar Stratos reject infrared heat, helping control cabin temperature without pushing the HVAC system harder. On hot days, the difference is immediately noticeable.
It’s not a matter of looks. It’s a matter of longevity and comfort.

We Protect the EVs We Drive
Urban Werks doesn’t just work on EVs. We live with them. Neil, our founder, drives a Rivian R1T. We’ve installed a Tesla charger in our bay because we consistently serve the EV community. These vehicles are regulars in our studio, and we’ve built systems around protecting them properly.
Our experience isn’t theoretical. It’s built on daily installs, real paint, and real problems we’ve solved for clients who care about keeping their vehicles in top condition.
If you’ve recently taken delivery of an EV or are planning to, it’s worth having a conversation about protection. From PPF to coating to ceramic tint, Urban Werks is ready.
